The iGEM is an international synthetic biology competition launched by the MIT in 2003 for students. Today, it attracts over 300 teams from around the globe, including one from Aix-Marseille Université, led by the Laboratory for macromolecular systems engineering (LISM).

The aim of the competition is to provide an innovative solution to a real world problem using synthetic biology.

The team is interdisciplinary and made up of bachelor’s and master’s students. It is managed by PhD students, engineers and researchers at the IM2B. Changed each year, the iGEM team designs, develops and promotes a multidisciplinary project drawing on its knowledge in biology, chemistry, IT, mathematics, engineering as well as in economy and law.

This initiative encourages students to apply their knowledge in a professional and legal context, to develop an international vision and to establish contacts with industrial and institutional partners.

Since its creation, the IM2B has supported this initiative, which is described by the IM2B’s Scientific and Training Advisory Board as an extraordinary educational tool and exceptional showcase.
